Charity auction: &Tradition and "Studies of a bench"

Both traditional and innovative Danish design characterize the international brand &Tradition, which experimentally focuses on designing tomorrow's classics. Now you can bid on benches from their international design and art project "Studies of a Bench", when the benches are being sold to benefit charitable causes. "Studies of a Bench" is created by Agnes Studio, Studioutte, Jeonghwa Seo, Savvy Studio and All the Way to Paris and will be auctioned online on 12 November.

The design project "Studies of a Bench" was exhibited for the first time during the Copenhagen festival “3daysofdesign” 12-14. June 2024. In "Studies of a Bench", five designers and international design studios explored the creative possibilities of a bench. Under different cultural influences, five design studios were brought together and anchored the global &Tradition community in a common interpretation of the social object. Now you can once again experience &Tradition's visions when the benches are offered for sale at auction. The proceeds from the sale are donated to charitable causes selected by the creators from "Studies of a Bench" - namely the designers themselves and the participating design studios.

&Tradition

&Tradition was founded in Copenhagen in 2010 and is an international brand that builds on the heritage of classic Danish craftsmanship and design. &Tradition tells stories with originality. Regardless of whether their artistic starting point is brand new or retro, they are passionate about designing tomorrow's classics. &Tradition's portfolio spans several decades of timeless design icons – from Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen's Mayor's Sofa designed especially for Søllerød's town hall in 1939 to Verner Panton's norm-breaking Flowerpot lamp, which was first produced in the late 1960s. &Tradition's collection of furniture, lighting and interiors ranges from newly produced classics to contemporary design and works of art.

"Lata Bench". Bench of aluminum cans and steel. Designed 2024. Made by Agnes Studio, Guatemala. Estimate: DKK 15,000-20,000.

Agnes Studio (Guatemala): “Lata Bench”.

Bench in compressed aluminum cans and powder coated steel. The Lata Bench composed of modular blocks is a playful experiment with a simple bench archetype. It explores the potential of a non-traditional material and its possible uses. Agnes Studio bases its practice on materialising hypothetical futures, alternate realities and other-worlds for the creation of objects that live between art and design. They   explore and defy the boundaries of traditional and experimental craft methods.

Bid and support Defensores de la Naturaleza, a Guatemalan non-profit organisation is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources.

Studioutte (Italy): “Falda”.

Bench in pine and natural aluminum. A concise, yet intricate entity, the Falda bench encapsulates the rudimentary architecture of a roof. Composed of elongated solid wood that rests precisely on untreated natural aluminium. The vision of studioutte is distinctly Italian with an integrated, harmonious reality. Its hybrid design is composed of vernacular architecture research and influences across various regional practices.

Bid and support Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), an Italian nonprofit organisation is dedicated to the protection and preservation of Italy's cultural heritage and natural landscapes.

"Falda". Long bench of black lacquered wood and aluminium. Designed 2024. Made by Studioutte, Italy. Estimate: DKK 15,000-20,000.
"Cylinder Bench" Bench made of aluminum and acrylic. Designed 2024. Made by Jeonghwa. Korea. Estimate: DKK 15,000-20,000.

Jeonghwa Seo (South Korea): “Cylinder Bench”.

Bench in cast aluminum and acrylic. An intriguing interplay between shape, material, softness and brutality, the Cylinder Bench is a formation of cast aluminium tubes and transparent acrylic. Sanded down to achieve an opaque, organic quality, the acrylic slab sits atop the aluminium construction, maximising the structural beauty throughout the bench. Jeonghwa Seo research functional forms using various materials and explores the tactile sense and possibilities of practical objects through structural experiments.

Bid and support DoRunDoRun is dedicated to creating an equal and violence-free world for women in Asia.

Savvy Studio (Mexico/ USA): “Proletariat”.

Bench in marble offcuts. The Proletariat bench is a physical provocation of concept. A universal form that exists in many countries and cultures, from farmyards to city parks – this simple construction of matter, created through instinct, is inherently unclaimable. Irony underpins the Proletariat bench, the common man’s furniture piece made with the scraps of a luxury material that would otherwise be discarded. Savvy Studio is a design and branding practice based in New York and Mexico City. The studio’s core practice is based on research and exploration of culture – inspired by art, history and materiality – creating each project in a deeply contemplative manner.

Bid and support Granja Hogar provides an opportunity for young people to improve their lives through education, offering a home where they can feel cared for and protected.

"Proletariat" Marble bench. Designed 2024. Made by Savvy Studio, MX/US. Estimate: DKK 15,000-20,000.
"Lucent". Long bench of red painted wood. Designed 2024. Produced by All the Way to Paris, DK/SE. Estimate: DKK 15,000-20,000.

All the Way to Paris (Denmark/ Sweden): “Lucent”.

Bench in Swedish fir. The Lucent bench is an exercise in altering simple properties. An evolving design, its dynamic nature emerges as the viewer’s perspective shifts, transforming the solid, straight form into angles of transparency and new directions. The stained surface enhances the wood’s natural grain with a bold yet translucent colour. All the Way to Paris started as a graphic design duo in 2004 and has since evolved into an award-winning group of global talents with a passion for pushing the creative envelope and going beyond the boundaries of the expected.

Bid and support Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). This international, humanitarian organization provides emergency medical care for people in crisis situations.
