Sophie Christine Smidt was the daughter of the governor of St. Croix, Claus Langhaar Smidt (1761–1884). He was a very capable civil servant, who in 1799 was appointed administrator of the Christiansted jurisdiction on St. Croix, and in 1807, he became a member of the West Indies government. In 1813, Sophie Christine married the parish priest Jørgen Nicolai Oxholm (1784–1849). The wedding was held on Constitution Hill on St. Croix. She became a much-loved grandmother in both the Smidt and Oxholm families.
