Zhao Kailin (b. 1961, d. 2023)
Model. Signed Zhao Kai Lin 1992–94. Oil on canvas. 97×90.5 cm.
Zhao Kailin moves within the realistic branch, and with Western traditions as well as Chinese culture, he manages to create elegant motifs of women in particular, where they reflect the beauty of Chinese culture. Based on the Western tradition of portraiture and composition as well as Chinese culture, he narrates the direct gaze of his seated models, with a quiet aesthetic that speaks of inner beauty. In Kailin's art, the realistic and the surreal scenes disrupt people's habitual tendency towards visual solidity, and the abstract colors unfold a world of the fresh and the sublime. Kailin graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1991, where he studied Western-style oil painting. Kailin is greatly inspired by three artists he encountered during his studies: Caravaggio, Rembrandt and John Singer Sargent. He has shown works in both group and solo exhibitions, and was an active artist until his death in 2023.
