When Marie Krøyer (1867–1940) left Krøyer, he threw his love at Henny Brodersen, who was married to the town treasurer of Skagen Johan Friedrich (Hansi) Brodersen (1858–1943). Henny had taken care of their daughter Vibeke (1895–1985) during the turbulent years after Marie had fallen in love with Hugo Alfvén (1872–1960). Henny Brodersen cared for Krøyer until the end and sat with Krøyer's daughter Vibeke, and Michael (1849–1927) and Anna Ancher around his deathbed.

When Krøyer painted his large Midsummer painting, he separated the two spouses so that Henny stands to the left of the fire, and Hansi stands to the right with her sister-in-law under his arm. Henny stands, as the only person in the large painting, looking directly at the artist - smiling lovingly with a flower in her hand and flowers in her large summer hat - exactly like in this study.
