A Russian porcelain military plate, decorated in colours and gold on white ground, border with laurel surmounted by the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle, cavetto depicting the 10th Infantry Division. The Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, marked underglazed green and overglazed blue with Imperial cypher of Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1855–1881), inscribed in Cyrillic “I. Ivanov after a painting by Balashov”. Diam. 24.8 cm.
The Russian painter Piotr Ivanovich Balashow (c. 1835–1888) was very known for his motifs with soldiers.
Provenance: Aksel Johannes Hansen (b. Brandstrup 1892, d. Tirsted 1944), captain with A.P. Møller-Mærsk. He sailed with S/S Elisabeth Mærsk in the 1930s, and called among others at Russia, where he bought the present plate and brought it home to Denmark. Thence by descent in Denmark until today.
