A Danish Régence silver tea caddy, gilt interior, of fluted shape, domed top with handle on circular screw-on lid, including a cork piece in silver mountings and eyelet, body engraved on each side with resp. an alliance coat of arms, presumably for the families Sehested and Rantzau, and a mirrored monogram for publisher Jacob Hegel, lobed base. Maker Knud Rasmussen Brandt, licensed in Horsens 1737–1778, the widow continues the workshop until 1785. Weight 596 g. H. (excl. handle) 17 cm.
The alliance coat of arms is supposedly for Malte Sehested (1688–1754) and his wife, Sophie Amalie Sehested, née Rantzau (1704–1790). They lived at Rodsteenseje Manor, not far from Horsens.
Provenance: Jacob Deichmann Frederik Hegel (1851–1918), publishing bookseller and owner of Gyldendal Bookstore. Thence by descent until today. Jacob Hegel was a large collector of art and antiques. His family says that he went to antique stores every day on the his way home from the office.
