Franz Kaisermann, also known as François Keisermann or Francesco Kaisermann, was born in the Swiss town of Yverdon in 1765.
In 1789, he relocated to Rome, where he commenced his career as a watercolourist under the tutelage of the Swiss painter Louis Ducros (1748–1810). Following a six-year sojourn in Naples, Kaisermann settled permanently in Rome in 1797.
It was there that he produced numerous vedute of the Eternal City—depicting ancient ruins, the cascades of Tivoli, and patrician villas nestled in the Alban Hills. His finely executed watercolours, typically signed “Keisermann”, attracted the attention of prominent Grand Tour travellers and earned him considerable acclaim.
Among his distinguished patrons were Prince Frederick of Saxe-Gotha, Grand Duke Michael, Duke Wolkonsky, Count Guriev, Prince Gustav of Sweden, and the British diplomat Stratford Canning, among others.
