Strömgren & Olsen

Observation watch of silver. No. 536. Lever escapement and crown-winding. Mean - and sidereal time. White enamel dial with two hour hands, two minute hands and one seconds hand. Dial signed “Patent Strömgren og Olsen”. The text below the signature seems washed out/deleted. Dust cap of silver. The watch is made by Alex Hüning, Geneva - stamp in the caseback herefrom. Case moreover stamped “84” and “54338”. 1918–19.

Jens Olsen (1872–1945) is mainly known for the World Clock which can be seen in Copenhagen City Hall. Long before working on the World Clock, Jens Olsen, in collaboration with Elis Strömgren (professor of astronomy at the Copenhagen University), made this pocket watch. Less than 30 examples are known to survive. The production started with no. 501 - most likely to make the watch seem a success with the early customers.
