Kurt Bang Petersen's Collection of Weapons (part 1)

During his lifetime, Kurt Bang Petersen (1943-2014) managed to assemble one of the very finest collections of Danish naval weapons in the world. The collection will now be sold at Bruun Rasmussen across several theme auctions. We begin with an Online Auction on 12 December.

"The Collectors"

Kurt Bang Petersen was trained as an electrician and employed by the Danish security company Securitas. After retirement, he fulfilled an old dream: to open his own business with military items, weapons, uniforms and other collectibles. The dream was fulfilled in one of the small pavilions that surround Kongens Have in Copenhagen, which were built in the early 1800s. "The Collectors" store, which was looked after by several members of the Historical Weapons Society, was, however, closed after a number of years due to redevelopment and a sharp increase in the rent.

A rare Danish commemorative sabre for the battle of Copenhagen 1801 in its scabbard. Estimate: DKK 10,000-15,000.
A Danish naval flintlock pistol pattern 1744/1802. Estimate: DKK 12,000.

Antique Weapons and Collectors Fair

Kurt Bang Petersen was a member of the Historical Weapons Society for 47 years, during which he was a rare force of nature who took the initiative to a number of activities: exhibitions at various museums, trips around both Denmark and abroad, and in particular the annual Antique Weapons and Collectors Fair in Copenhagen, which for more than 30 years grew and grew and became known throughout the Nordic countries as the largest fair of its kind. Without Kurt Bang Petersen, the fair would most likely not have reached this level.

Interest in Danish Naval Weapons

The collector's interest was primarily Danish naval weapons, which meant that the Holmen's Historical Collection in Copenhagen also made use of Kurt Bang Petersen's extensive knowledge of the field. He wrote a number of articles on the subject, but will primarily be remembered for the main work Danske Marineblankvåben volumes 1 and 2 published by the Society of Historical Weapons in 2001 and 2002. The publication has become the standard work on the subject and a fine tribute to Kurt Bang Petersen's efforts as a historian and collector of weapons.

It is therefore also with great pleasure that we can begin presenting  his own collection of Danish naval weapons. The extensive collection will be sold across several theme auctions. We therefore recommend that you keep an eye on the website as subsequent parts of the collection come up for auction.

Two pattern 1849 with c. 64 cm long blades and a pattern 1882 with a c. 63.5 cm long blade. Estimate: DKK 4,000.
