The Breakthrough at Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux

Anyone with even the slightest interest in the wine that flows out of Burgundy will likely have noticed that Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux has adopted a new style – both when it comes to its wines and the look of the labels. We are offering a handful of these new wines at the wine auction on 20 March.

It is no secret that more and more people are fighting to get their hands on the few bottles from Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux released each year to the world market as softly and elegantly as the wine inside. So, we are delighted to be able to present this new arrival on the scene. These bottles are evidence that Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux has undergone something of a makeover, both inside and outside the bottle. The previous style was leaning towards the dark and rustic – and rather underwhelming when you consider the richness of the land where the wine is grown. Instead, words such as alpine strawberries and raspberries and a bouquet of floral notes have now taken over and seem to be the superlatives hovering over the wine’s new style. However, that is just a small taster of the words that can be found in the florid language that flows from the keyboard when the critics gluttonously devour the wines of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux.

2018 is the first vintage under Charles Lachaux’s admiralty, and it features among the bottles up for auction. There are certain similarities in the techniques used at the vineyard at this domain and how Domaine Leroy goes about its craft – and not least Burgundy’s new-old star, Domaine Bizot. And though Charles Lachaux will most likely point out the ways in which he does his own thing, the comparison is largely indisputable from a commercial point of view.

The New Language on the Label

The fact that Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux’s labels have also been lifted out of the shadows and into the light is hard to miss, and this helps to underline the major change that has taken place. Prior to 2018, the labels featured a narrow, reddish-brown stripe with the name Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux written within it. The colour was presumably an allusion to the soil in which the producer was deeply rooted. The labels look rather different today, although still subdued in their overall style. Central to the new design is a coat of arms with a golden lion seemingly leading the way of the domain. The rest of the coat of arms is sky blue, a sun salutation to the climate that very much contributes to creating this luminous new style. A wine that seems to be made of the stuff of dreams, but which only very few can ever dream of tasting.
