A selection of antiques from the auction. The photograph was taken at one of Copenhagen's unique locations – the Øregaard Museum in Hellerup. The building is an old country house, built in 1806-1808 for the wealthy merchant and shipowner Johannes Søbøtker. In 1921, the building was transformed into a museum and today houses a collection of Danish art from 1750-1950 with an emphasis on art from Copenhagen and Northern Zealand. The collection includes works by Jens Juel, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Johan Laurentz Jensen, Lorenz Frølich, Laurits Andersen Ring, Paul Fischer, Astrid Holm and Jais Nielsen.

Selected: Antiques for Interior Design Enthusiasts and Collectors!

At this autumn's "Selected" auction on 11 October, we present a large group of furniture, mirrors and rugs in historical styles. The selection spans a period from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century and comes primarily from Scandinavia, Germany, England, southern Europe and in one instance East Africa.

This time the auction contains 176 lots, so there is plenty of opportunities to find inspiration for your personal decor or go in search of a unique antique object for the collection.

19th Century Artist Furniture

Some of the highlights of the auction include so-called ‘artist furniture’. Up through the 19th century, it was not uncommon for artists to work in more than one field. This meant that a number of artists also designed and decorated furniture. Many of them looked to antiquity to find inspiration for their furniture design. One of them was the Danish architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, whose main work is the building that houses the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen. At the auction, we have one of his stools in Pompeian style from around 1850. The Danish decorative painter Georg Hilker is best known for his decorations of rooms at, for instance, the University of Copenhagen, Thorvaldsens Museum and Sorø Academy, but next to his main line of work he also designed furniture. At the auction, we present one of his sofas with clear inspiration taken from the world of antiquity. He is also the man behind the decorations on a cradle up for auction, which the sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen designed in 1836. The cradle is an example of the many artist collaborations that also became common up through the 19th century.

French Temptations from a Private Home in Hamburg

If your taste leans more in the direction of southern European furniture design, the auction offers a number of French furniture pieces from a private home in Hamburg, where we have been allowed to sell the tasteful interior at this and upcoming auctions. This time it is a gilt mahogany armchair, made by the Parisian cabinetmaker François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter around 1810. From the same home comes a set of four Charles X armchairs and a French Directoire mahogany and gilt bronze mounted commode. We have also been to Italy for a visit to an equally magnificent home in Legnano, where we found a number of Italian furniture pieces, including a pair of Rococo-style console tables.

East African Chair – a Symbol of Power

Our auction also takes us to East Africa with a rare high back "Kiti Cha Enzi" chair from the late 19th century. The chair stands as a symbol of power and was designed for the wealthy elite on the Swahili coast by local artisans. The design is based on Spanish and Portuguese furniture art from the 17th century, and the chair helps shed light on the complex history of colonization, extensive trade in goods to and from East Africa and the exchange of cultural ideas.
