Julius Paulsen: The Versatile Artist

The Many Different Styles

In spite of the fact that Julius Paulsen (1860-1940) was an artist who achieved great artistic recognition while he lived, it is often his more famous contemporaries, P.S. Krøyer, L.A. Ring, J.F. Willumsen and Vilhelm Hammershøi, who have been highlighted by posterity. One reason may be that Paulsen is a difficult artist to classify within art history. He was influenced and inspired by the many different themes and styles that were dominant during his time but also by the art of old Italian and Dutch masters such as Tizian and Rembrandt. Therefore, you can see traces of both Impressionism, Symbolism and Realism in his work, as well as Renaissance and Baroque art. This makes it more difficult to define his oeuvre in relation to traditional styles.

The Landscape and the Light

As well as having a broad palette of style, Paulsen was equally versatile in his choice of motifs and genres. His repertoire includes everything from figure studies and portraits to interiors and landscapes, all of which we can present examples of at this auction. In the landscapes, we see, among other things, how Paulsen enjoyed playing with the influence of light on the surrounding nature, whether it was the dazzling backlight, the subtle evening light or the silver moonlight. Paulsen most often chose to reproduce landscapes from areas of Denmark that had been less depicted in Danish art. Among other places, he worked a lot in North Zealand, where areas around Tisvilde and Gilleleje were among his most favourite motifs. Jutland, his island of birth Fyn and motifs from his travels abroad were also explored in great detail throughout his life.
