From Congo to the Roman Empire

With the summer holidays over and done with, we have embarked on another coin season, and there are many good reasons to look through the lots at this auction. One of these is nothing less than the world's first 1 kilo coin of silver with colour printing from Congo. The coin is only minted in 555 copies.
From the Roman Emperor Nero's time comes a fine Dupondius - a copper coin, which on the reverse depicts Macellum Magnum, a food market in Rome that Nero ordered built in the year 59. A kind of precursor to the Danish Food Halls on Israels Plads in Copenhagen, if you will.
The preview will as always take place at Baltikavej 10 in Nordhavn on Friday from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
What’s up with the D?
The observant bidder will probably already have seen that a new reference has slipped into our descriptions of the Norwegian coins. Previously, where we have referred to NM for "Norges Mynter” (Norwegian Coins), we now write NMD in accordance with the new publication "Norges Mynter i Dansketiden 1449 - 1814” (Norwegain coins in the Time of Denmark 1449 - 1814). This is of course only relevant for coins up to and including Frederik VI’s reign over Norway - Norwegian coins younger than this will still be marked with NM.
