Extremely rare bottles
We are ending the year in style with these rarities that do not require any further introduction – you can find them described exquisitely already in various literary reference works about wine.
This is a special auction with the emphasis on single bottles. The auction includes a total of 315 lots; as many as 79 of these are Premier Cru from Bordeaux, but there is also plenty of scope for finding a special champagne for the New Year. Please note, that the final auction will takes place on Tuesday 27 December from 6 pm.
Sought-after singles
Our special auction includes as many as 48 vintages of Mouton Rothschild, including superb specimens from the 1945, 1947, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1961 vintages. All exceptionally rare vintages not often seen at auction.
You will also find sought-after vintages of Lafite, of which 1948, 1953 and 1955 vintages are seldom seen at auction. The same applies to the older vintages of Château Latour and Château Margaux. You will find vintages such as 1950, 1955 and 1959 here.
All these older, well-preserved wines come from a private Danish cellar where storage conditions have been good and very stable over many years. The majority of these wines were bought young and have been stored in the same place ever since. You will also find a number of older bottles from the same cellar at the auction – for example, Cheval Blanc 1953, 1961, Chateau Ausone 1955 and Montrose 1937, 1953, 1959, 1961.
220 years old and still at its best
There are not many living organisms on Mother Earth capable of surviving as long as a good Madeira. And this Madeira is very much alive. It is in the peak of condition and looks set to keep for another 50–100 years yet. Back in 1790, not a lot of people imagined that in 2011 we would still be able to enjoy this sweet wine from one of the rainy islands of the Atlantic, now much better known as a holiday destination than for its wine. The wine in question was made from the Terrantez grape, which has been out of Madeira production for many years. It has been regarded as something of a “mongrel”, so it is not one of the favoured four grapes otherwise used. But it is making a come-back and is to be found on a few labels.
If you are planning a big dinner with Foie Gras or blue cheese, it would be highly appropriate to accompany this with a magnificent Sauternes. For those with a sweet tooth, we have some exciting bottles such as Yquem 1938, 1948, Rayne Vigneau 1921 and Doisy Däene 1955.
Champagne from the depths of the ocean
Heidsieck Monopole “Goût Américain” 1907 is without doubt one of the oldest champagnes today. This is because it has spent 80 years on the sea bed! At 4°C in total darkness and under high pressure. An excellent – if different – type of storage!
The bottle up for auction was part of the cargo carried by the Swedish schooner “Jönköping” on 3 November 1916 when, early in the morning, it was sunk by a German U-boat. The bottles of champagne were originally intended for Russian army officers, but the Germans had other ideas. In 1997, the bottles were salvaged by Swedish divers and have since been tasted and traded at auction both at Christie’s and here at Bruun Rasmussen. The bottle offered here has a light colour and a nice high level. The capsule still bears the name of the wine and the designation “Goût Americain”, which refers to the slightly sweeter champagne taste that the Americans preferred for many years. Today it is known simply as “Sec” or “Demi-Sec”.
Naturally, there is a wealth of other top champagnes for your New Year celebrations, including Krug, Bollinger, Veuve Clicquot, Dom Pérignon and Louis Roederer.
All in all, there are plenty of singles in this auction, all looking for a new love – so get bidding in this last wine auction of the year.
Happy bidding!
