P. S. Krøyer (b. Stavanger 1851, d. Skagen 1909)

A card with a sketch showing the artist in his rooms, including a floor plan of the rooms and a confidential note to Henny Brodersen. Pencil and drawing ink on paper. With dedication in Danish: Your Søren Middelfart March 1907. Sheet size 11.5×19 cm.

The card contains a selfportrait sketch of the artist sitting by a desk, a floorplan of Krøyers newly decorated rooms (at this point he was commited to the mental institution, Middelfart Sindssygeanstalt, where he was attended to by the Specialist Fritz Lange). The letter for Henny Brodersen reads as follows (In Danish): Middelfart, March 1907. My dearest Henny! This is the aproximate look of the room which is now my drawingroom, which you did not get to see or to select for me - since at the time I could not yet overcome my horror and disgust any more than my firm decision never to let myself be dragged into a madness.

Henny! Where was the promise you made me in Skagen- never to contribute to or facilitate my going into such a place. You even threatened to bereave me of your friendship - broke the other promise you made me: never to leave me.

I could no longer stick to the firm decision of dying quickly in Skagen in your arms - oh yes a thousand times easier - that would be bliss compared to being once againg comitted to an asylum such as this. Nay - you have trusted it to last only for a few days - let us see. Besides I now (along the middle of page 2) have this nice little appartment in the asylum and now, now we hope you have done the right thing - I know, I will probably not be completely out of my mind, because I will eventually get out and Lange is good and kind.

Yes - (left side of the frontpage) You have done it out of love for me - who has entered the place out of love for you - and Fr. Lange. My best to Ruth and Detlef, Your Soeren.

When Marie Krøyer left the artist, he turned his attention to Henny Brodersen, who was married to Hans Brodersen, and who had tended to the daughter, Vibeke, in the turbulent years after Marie had fallen for Hugo Alfvén. Krøyer's connection with Henny Brodersen remained unchanged until the end, and in one of his last exhibitions he exhibited no less than 15 portraits of her. Henny Brodersen nursed Krøyer until his death in 1909 and sat with him at his deathbed with her husband, with Krøyer's daughter Vibeke and Michael and Anna Ancher.
