Niels Bredal became a student at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1860. During his seven years at the Academy, he explored various disciplines but ultimately trained as a landscape painter. Throughout his artistic practice, Bredal had a fondness for architecture, which often played a central role in his landscape paintings.
In and around Rome, where he had an eight-year stay from 1872 to 1880, Bredal found beautiful landscapes and interesting architecture. During his time in Italy, he began to paint with watercolour, which had a different delicacy compared to oil painting. Along the way, he sent works back to Denmark, and they were well received despite watercolor painting not yet had gained currency. For this reason, Bredal became particularly known for his watercolours.
Due to his long stay in Rome, Bredal became a well-liked and central figure in the Scandinavian artist community.
The paper has turned yellow. Minor discolourations. Minor paper loss in corners along with minimal paper loss in the right side. Leftovers from tape on the reverse.
