Here Wivel writes the following about the painting: “No one has ever painted snow quite like L.A. Ring. His variations of the grey tones on an icy foundation of white have never been matched by another Danish artist. The winter of 1929 was unusually harsh, and Ring painted several works with snow from Sankt Jørgensbjerg, which are an example of his vision and undiminished strength as an artist. In ”Brøndgade i sne. Sankt Jørgensbjerg“ (Brøndgade Covered in Snow. Sankt Jørgensbjerg), 1929, the artist opens up the perspective – on the ground and in the sky, between the houses in the snow. The gaze follows Brøndgade downwards between the houses and the snowbanks pushed up against the walls along the path. It is deep winter. The snow glistens on the roofs of the houses together with the yellow-washed walls and glimpses of rust-red tiles, framed by ink-black contours. But the gaze also follows the path upwards into the lead-grey, snow-heavy sky. Here telephone poles and telegraph wires draw their diagonal lines over the uniform dark surface from a foothold somewhere on the ground and right up into an unguarded cosmos outside the frame of the painting. Four strings in a toneless chord that Ring strikes in the frost.”
