Johannes Wiedewelt (b. København 1731, d. s.p. 1802)

Monumenta Fredensburgica Iussu Friderici V Erecta. [Cph 1769]. French edition. Engraved frontispiece, 3 text leaves + 37 (+3) engraved plates numb. I-XXXVII, 2 of which are double-page. Large folio. C. 51×36 cm. Plate VIII with repaired tear to lower part (c. 6,5 cm.). Minimal foxing to plate XII and XIII, otherwise a very clean copy. Bound in cont. full marbled paper. Spine repaired and worn, corners bumped.

It took the Danish architect and engraver Johannes Gottfred Bradt (1741–1770) 4 years to etch this magnificent record of the sculptures in the garden of Fredensborg castle after drawings by the greatest Danish sculptor of the 18th century, Johannes Wiedewelt (1731–1802). Bradt also etched for N.H. Jardin's work: Plans, coupes et elevations (issued in 1769).
