An unusually rare signet ring of 16–18 kt. gold, raised octagonal-shaped top with flat ornament in the form of carved rock crystal with the name and coat of arms of the Danish courtier and fief-holder, Ernst Norman (1579–1645), decorated with scrolling black enamel. C. 1620. Top 1.8×1.3 cm. Size approx. 64.

Ernst Norman had an impressive career with King Christian IV of Denmark (1577–1648, regent from 1588) - as a page, royal travel companion, chamberlain, cavalry company leader during the Kalmar War, court cupbearer and fief-holder. Ernst Norman was granted several estates, including Koldinghus, Palsgård and Selsø. He was also guardian of Christian IV's son with Karen Andersdatter, Hans Ulrik Gyldenløve, who married Regitze Grubbe.

The present signet ring is very similar to King Christian IV of Denmark's signet ring, which is preserved in the Royal Collection at Rosenborg and dated ca. 1625. Ernst Norman was granted the estate of Koldinghus in 1620, and the ring was probably made for this occasion and presumably a gift from the king.

Provenance: Danish private ownership.
