Krøyer painted the ancient theatre several times during his stay in Taormina, Sicily, from January to May 1901.
Provenance: Løveapoteket in Odense by pharmacist Peter Johansen de Neergaard and Christiane Charlotte de Neergaard; their daughter Bodil Vibeke Neergaard Preetzmann, Aunsbjerg Manor; thence by descent until today.
