Holger Drachmann (b. Copenhagen 1846, d. Hornbæk 1908)

In April-October 1871, Holger Drachmann stayed in England. The following year, he exhibited three paintings related to the trip to England: “Tidlig morgen i kanalen” (Early morning in the canal); “Tåget formiddag Margate” (Misty morning Margate); and the present painting. Margate is a coastal town south east of London.

On the stretcher is written: “Indsejlingen til Shjeld” (The entrance to Shield).

The River Tyne is a river in north-east England. It is formed by the North Tyne and South Tyne and on either side of the entrance from the North Sea are the North and South Shields.
