Erik Henningsen (b. Copenhagen 1855, d. s.p. 1930)

An artist working at the easel. Unsigned. Oil on canvas laid on panel. 38×31.5 cm.

Provenance: In the artist's family by descent untill today.

Erik Henningsen worked in the realistic tradition, and several of his works contained social critique and rendered the hardships of workers and the poor. Excellent examples of this are seen in his major works “Sat ud” (Evicted Tenants) from 1892, now located in The Danish National Gallery, and: 'Summum jus, summa injuria. Barnemodet', (The Child Murder) from 1886, now in The Hirschsprung Collection.

At Bruun Rasmussen we now have the pleasure of offering a small collection of studies in oil which has been passed on in the artist’s family until today. The collection contains studies of harbour and dock areas, soldiers marching with the Danish flag and several renderings of artists at work.

Condition

A few minor crackles and superfivcial scratches. In need of a light surface cleaning.
