Agnes Slott-Møller (b. Copenhagen 1862, d. Funen Island 1937)
“Landskab i Aftenskumringen, Vejlesø” (Landscape at dusk, Vejlesø). Signed Agnes Slott-Møller 1929. Oil on canvas. 76×31 cm. Period frame.
As a young girl Agnes Rambusch went to a private school directed by the daughters of C. W. Eckersberg, Julie and Emilie, and at an early age she developed an interest in art and began attending art exhibitions. She received her training at The drawing- and arts and crafts school for women (Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder) from 1878 until finishing in 1885. Hereafter she was a student of P.S. Krøyer until 1886 and after that of the artist Harald Slott-Møller. She married Harald Slott-Møller in 1888 and the couple went on a combined honeymoon and study tour to Italy and Paris in 1888–1889. Slott-Møller's interest in Danish myths and legends nurtured her circle of motifs and she also sought inspiration in medieval art, in the arts and crafts movement, and in the art of the preraphaelites. Using knights and maids as noble rolemodels she sought to create art to hold a mirror up to the present time.
To Agnes Slott-Møller Danish nature and landscapes were also closely connected to the myths and legends - and vice versa. She writes: “Inside me lives a pictorial world of the Danish Middle Ages, I think it has been there as far back as I can remember. If I travel out in Danish nature, this ”reminds“ me of that world, and I immerse myself in my fantasy world, so it becomes alive and forms images through impressions I have received from nature.” (Agnes Slott-Møller, “Tekst”, in “Tilskueren”, April 1910, p. 331).
Exhibited: “Agnes Slott-Møller. Skønhed er til evig glæde” (Agnes Slott-Møller. A thing of Beauty is a joy forever) at Skovgaard Museum, Viborg, Fyns Kunstmuseum, Odense, Vejen Kunstmuseum and Øregaard Museum, Copenhagen 2008–2010, no. 52 and reproduced and registered in the exhibition catalogue p. 108, 109 and in the oeuvre catalogue p. 6.
