Walter Henry Williams (b. Brooklyn, New York 1920, d. Copenhagen 1998)
“Back Porch”. Signed W.W. 56; titled on an exhibition label at the reverse. Oil and sand on masonite. 86×73 cm.
Provenance: Danish private collection. Given to the current owner's family in the mid/late 1950s.
Walter Henry Williams Jr. grew up in New York, but moved to Denmark in 1956 and married the ceramist Marlena Jacobsen. Williams' mother was born in the former Danish colonies of the Virgin Islands, and he had heard stories from Denmark throughout his upbringing.
The new impressions meant a drastic change in his world of subjects, which changed from urban scenarios to open landscapes often with symbolic elements.
From 1958–1972 Williams returned to the United States, but traveled extensively and exhibited around the world - until he became a Danish citizen in 1973. His works are represented in several private collections and major museums, including the Smithsonian and the Whitney Museum of Art.
