Robert Jacobsen (b. Copenhagen 1912, d. Egtved 1993)
Jean Dewasne (b. Lille 1921, d. Paris 1999)
Concrete sculpture. Signed underneath R.J. 4–5-49. Polychrome decorated iron. The painted decoration made by Jean Dewasne. H. 30 cm. B. 26 cm. D. 18 cm.
After two years in Paris, Robert Jacobsen stayed in Denmark for most of 1949. At the same time, the French painter Jean Dewasne was visiting Denmark, where he lived in the Jacobsen family’s allotment hut. The two artists shared a close and fruitful collaboration, which this beautiful, small sculpture is a concrete example of.
The dating on the sculpture is also interesting. Jacobsen's sympathy with the resistance movement in Denmark during WW II was heartfelt, and with his dating of 4–5-1949 on the piece it seems natural to interpret the ascending swirl of dancing triangles as a commemorative symbol of the euphoria felt on the eve of Denmark’s liberation four years previously.
