The Greek painter Ioannis (Jean) Altamura is often described as the “Greek Skagen painter”. King George I (The Danish prince Wilhelm) (1845–1913) discovered Altamuras' talent for painting and helped him to join the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He arrived at the age of 20 in 1873 and spent three years in Denmark. In 1876, he stayed in Skagen and became good friends with Michael (1849–1927) and Anna (1859–1935) Ancher, and through them he also met Holger Drachmann (1846–1908) and P.S. Krøyer (1851–1909). The young Greek became everyone's favorite. Everyone loved the charming young man, especially the ladies. The summer of 1876 in Skagen was later referred to as the summer of Altamura! Altamura was a plein air painter and was greatly inspired by the Skagen Painters. He also had a great interest in marine painting and took a job on the frigate “Jylland” to gain the proper maritime knowledge to paint marines. He painted Øresund and Kronborg several times during his stay in Denmark. Altamura died of tuberculosis when he was only 26 years old.
