Theodor Philipsen (b. Copenhagen 1840, d. s.p. 1920)

Mercury lulling Argus to sleep. Presumably 1891–1893. Unsigned. Ceramic dish decorated and glazed in colours. Diametre ca. 36.5 cm.

In Flemming Brix, Finn Terman Frederiksen and Svend Erik Lorentzen (BFL), A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Theodor Philipsen, 2016, a signed version with a similar motif is mentioned (BFL 1696) from 1893 and in the updated version of the catalogue also a ceramic dish (BFL 1688) fra 1891 several other ceramic works and sketches with the same motif.

Provenance: Art dealer Martin Grosell, in his family until today.

Condition

A crack from the right side diagonally towards the middle c.19 cm long.
