Ever since the 1840s, A. Lange & Söhne has been one of the most important players in the rich history of German precision timekeeping. The company was unfortunately closed down after World War II, as the Soviet regime wanted to use their properties to produce low-cost, low-quality watches for the people. Almost 50 years later, on October 24th, 1994, Walter Lange, the grandson of the founder, managed to revive the watchmaking powerhouse to the level that it was originally known for. They reestablished themselves by introducing four models to the public – one of which was the Saxonia. This particular reference, the 102.001, is the first and thus original iteration of the Saxonia. The outsized date has become an A. Lange & Söhne trademark and is inspired by the 5-minute clock in the Semper Opera in Dresden, developed by the founder, Ferdinand Adolph Lange and his master, Johann F. Gutkaes. Not many were produced before tweaks and changes were made, making this reference a rare find.
