Alfred Joseph Woolmer (b. Exeter 1805, d. London 1892)

Princess Elisabeth at her deathbed. Unsigned. Inscribed on the back A. J. Wolmar R. A. 1852. Oil on canvas. 82×102 cm.

Elizabeth Stuart (1635–1650) was the second daughter of King Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France. At the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, Elizabeth, and her brother, the Duke of Gloucester, were placed under the care of the Parliament. In 1650, Elizabeth's brother, the now titular Charles II, journeyed to Scotland to be crowned king there. The Parliament moved Elizabeth to the Isle of Wight. During the move Elizabeth caught a cold, that quickly developed into pneumonia. She died on 8 September 1650 at Carisbrooke Castle.
