Friedrich Thöming (b. Eckernförde 1802, d. Naples 1873)

The Blue Grotto on Capri. Signed Thöming. Oil on paper laid on cardboard. 16×21 cm.

After attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in the early 1820s, Thöming settled permanently in 1824 in Italy, partly in Rome and partly in Naples, where he died in 1873. He is known for his reproductions of the Blue Grotto on Capri, which the two German painters August Kopisch and Ernst Fries “rediscovered” in 1826, and the grotto soon became a coveted destination for tourists and a favourite motif for the artists. Thorvaldsen Museum owns a very similar painting from the Blue Grotto. That one dated 1833 and with the dimensions 13×21.5 cm (Inv. No. B297).
