C. W. Eckersberg (b. Blåkrog near Aabenraa 1783, d. Copenhagen 1853)
View of Liselund. In the foreground two young women strolling in the garden of Liselund and a gardener with his tools over his shoulder. 1809. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 33×36 cm.
Two paintings with this motif are known by C. W. Eckersberg. One dated E. 1809 and the present one a repetition by the painter's own hand.
In 1809, Christopher von Bülow commissioned a series of landscape paintings by Eckersberg. He wanted Eckersberg to paint the manor Nordfeld, which he owned, but also the surrounding landscape - including the Cliffs of Møn and as here Liselund. It is uncertain how many paintings Eckersberg painted for Christopher von Bülow during and after his stay at Nordfeld, but the series of landscape paintings was Eckersberg's last large job before he in 1810 started to make preparations for his journey to Paris and Rome, not returning to Copenhagen until 1816. Two paintings from the Møn series are today in the Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark), “Prospekt af egnen ved Liselund på Møn” (View of a landscape near Liselund, Møn) (Inv. No. KMS7984) and “Landskab med stente, Møn” (Landscape with stile, Møn) (Inv. No. KMS7694).
