Exhibited: The Nivaagaard Collection, “Venskabsportrætter fra Rom”, 2016, Cat. No. 16, mentioned p. 34, ill. p. 34.

Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom (Inv. No. AI 1).

Peter Raadsig was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1821 and during his studies, he studied both landscape painting and genre painting. Like many other young artists, Raadsig wanted to go on a study trip to Italy. However, he was not successful in obtaining any scholarships, so he ended up financing the trip himself. Despite the lack of financial support from a scholarship, he managed to spend four years in Rome from 1841 to 1845, followed by a year in Munich from 1845 to 1846.

Like Raadsig, Julius Friedlænder was also fond of genre painting and used his many sketches from his trip to Italy as the basis for genre paintings, he painted later on.
