Classical ruins at the foot of a blooming tree. Signed Begas-Parmentier. Oil on canvas. 65×38 cm.

Louise Begas-Parmentier, née Parmentier, received her first training with the Austrian landscape painter Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892) and the German etcher William Unger (1837–1932). By the age of twenty-two, she was exhibiting her landscapes at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. She began a series of study trips to Italy, focusing on Venice in 1875 an after 1876, her Italian-themed paintings were a regular sight in exhibitions at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

In 1877 she married her fellow painter Adalbert Begas (1836–1888). The couple moved into a luxurious house with a studio south of the Tiergarten in Berlin, where she created flower decorated fans along with painting. Both were very interested in Italy and took repeated study-trips to especially Sicily, Capri and Venice.

After the loss of her husband on one of the trips, Begas-Parmentier continued to travel and exhibit widely - her art still focused on Italian landscapes, often displaying Italian architecture or classical ruins, as shown in the present painting. She exhibited her work at the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. For several years, she served on the board of the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen, an artists' association for promoting art by women, who were not able to attend the official academies until 1919.

In addition to her artistic activities, her home was famous as a literary salon and her home was regularly visited by cultural celebrities of the time. In 1900, the magazine Daheim stated: “She is one of the most popular and most honored phenomena of the Berlin artistic world; the center of a fine intellectual, casual, artistic sociability”.
