The motif in the present work comes from the folk song “Ridderens Runeslag”. In this tragic tale, Mr. Peder boasts to Mr. Oluf with the fact that he can entice anyone with his magic harp – even Mr. Oluf’s fiancée Mrs. Mette. He succeeds to seduce Mrs. Mette, and she returns home to Mr. Oluf, who welcomes her, but unable to forgive herself, she commits suicide.
