After Frederik II's death in 1588, Denmark was ruled by a regency while the Crown Prince Christian (IV) came of age. According to tradition, Chancellor Niels Kaas on his deathbed in 1594 gave the Crown Prince Christian the keys to the vaults of Copenhagen Castle, where the Danish Crown Regalia were kept.
