“La Chaise”. Lounge chair with sculptural polyurethane shell. Base of chrome-plated tubular steel on solid stained oak base. Designed 1948. This example manufactured 2006 by Vitra, with maker's paper label. L. 150 cm.
The chair was designed 1948 for a competition set by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City, but it was not until 1991 that “La Chaise” was put into production by Vitra. The organic and sculptural shape was inspired by Gaston Lachaise's sculpture “Floating Figure”.
