Poul Henningsen (b. Ordrup 1894, d. Hillerød 1967)

“PH Crystal chandelier”. Unique eight-light brass chandelier with crystal prisms. Red glass middle shade and canopy. Designed and made to order 1915–1916 by Poul Henningsen. H. 120 cm. Diam. 63 cm.

The First PH Lamp In 1915, Poul Henningsen was entrusted with the task of being the architect in charge of the renovation of a villa on Frederiksberg Allé owned by the lawyer and friend of the family, Falk Jensen. “Many strange and tortuous things emanated from this assignment, amongst others a modern light fitting,” PH wrote in 1966.

The lamp was left in the attic of Falk Jensen's holiday home in North Zealand for 70 years. Hence by descent to present owners family.

Literature: ”Light Years Ahead“, the present lamp is mentioned on page 76 in the chapter entitled ”The Taming of the Light – From Prisms to Reflective Shades".

“My God, it looks like something made by a deranged bike mechanic.” Poul Henningsen’s reaction upon seeing the chandelier years later.
