Kristian Zahrtmann visited Padua in the spring 1910, here he painted three paintings. The two others with motifs from the Basilica Saint Anthony of Padua. The painting is mentioned in Sophus Danneskjold-Samsøe's catalogue raisonné (in Danish): “He lived in the shadow of the church of S. Antonio and it was around it that his work was concentrated. He painted a kneeling priest in front of the altar, and from 3/6–20/6 he made a painting of Donatello's ”Gattamelata“ in the square; the equestrian statue on its warmly glowing plinth is shaped in luminous green and brown-gold against a strong blue sky, shaped firmly and vividly with fresh and capricious brushwork.” (p. 442).
