Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)
Portrait of Ella Saxild. Signed and dated M. A. 1904. Oil on canvas. 47×39 cm.
The portrait is a study for “Engel Saxild og hendes tvillingesøster Ella spiller skak” (Engel Saxild and her twin sister playing chess in the home of the Ancher family on Markvej in Skagen), dated 1905.
Literature: “Kunst i Privat eje”, vol. III, 1945, illustrated and mentioned p. 280 (in Danish): This is a fine example of how female youth also could inspire the artist, who otherwise primarily found his models among the weather-beaten fishermen in Skagen.
In need of a light surface cleaning.
