Michael Kvium (b. Horsens 1955)

“The Naked Eye on a Wellpressed Lie I”, 2012. Signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 191×191 cm. Unframed.

Exhibited: “Tail to Tail - Michael Kvium”, Galleri Nils Stærk, Copenhagen, March - May 2012. Exhibited: “Michael Kvium - Real Monsters”, KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg, February - April 2013. Provenance: Private collection, Denmark. Acquired from Galleri Nils Stærk.

"Kvium paints with the fierce brush and mercilessly places life right next to death, all while the human figures' darker sides are overexposed by jarring floodlights. In the exhibition in Aalborg they appear under the title 'Real Monsters', and Kvium makes his intention clear: “The real monsters are ourselves (...) I am not trying to paint a picture as ugly as possible – but with as little deceit as possible, and there is a human obligation to not cause either the Earth or each other too much pain. That is why it is important that we don’t just recognize the others and highlight their shortcomings. First and foremost, we must recognize ourselves”.

Ole Bak Jakobsen: “I am not trying to paint a picture as ugly as possible”. Interview with Michael Kvium in connection with the above-mentioned exhibition at KUNSTEN in Aalborg. Published on Kunsten.nu, 6 February 2013.
