Holger H. Jerichau (b. Copenhagen 1861, d. s.p. 1900)

View of Pompeii towards Mount Vesuvius with an artist by the easel in the foreground. Signed Holger H. Jerichau. Oil on canvas laid on canvas. 48×69 cm.

Presumably sold at an auction of paintings by Holger H. Jerichau, Charlottenborg 1888 no. 53 with the title “Pompeii, seen oppe fra Høiderne” (Pompeii seen from the heights).

As the son of the painter Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann (1819–1881) and the sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau (1816–1883), he grew up in a home of artists; his brother Harald (1851–1878) also became a painter. Holger H. Jerichau began a business education in Germany, which he, however, interrupted to learn the art of painting with his mother as his teacher. He lived most of his life abroad, especially in Italy, where the present painting is carried out.
