Richard Mortensen (b. Copenhagen 1910, d. Kirke Hyllinge 1993)

“Opus Tamaris, nr. 4”, Tamaris-sur-Mer 14 September 1951. “Espace abstrait classique sous l'influence d'enlèvement de la force de gravitation” (Classic abstract space under the influence of the removal of gravitational force). Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 130×97 cm.

Literature: Jan Würtz Frandsen: “Richard Mortensen: Afklaringens år 1940–1958. Besættelse og rekonstruktion”, Copenhagen 1992, reproduced on working sketches, fig. 575 and 576 p. 504 and mentioned pp. 503–509. Exhibited: “Mortensen”, Galerie Denise René, Paris 18 December 1951–30 January 1952. Provenance: Private collection, Denmark.

The “Opus Tamaris” series represents a refinement of Mortensen’s embrace and cultivation of a classical modernist tradition. As he himself puts it, he replaces Kandinsky’s physical-mechanical conception of the image with one based on the psychology of perception.
