Anna Rosenkrantz (b. 1863, d. 1944)

Interior from Helligaandskirken in Copenhagen. Signed and dated Anna Rosenkrantz, Helligaandskirken 1901. Oil on canvas mounted on panel mounted on canvas. 35×30 cm.

Our knowledge of kunstneren baroness Anna Rosenkrantz I rather limited - however we can deduce, from the few sources we have, that she exhibited regularly and traveled to a certain extent.

Rosenkrantz favoured grand interiors as motifs and her noble title being the daughter of colonel Hans Frederik baron Rosenkrantz (1822–1905) and baroness Fanny Charlotte Vilhelmine Emilie Stockfleth (1827–1907) has presumably given her ample access to study castles and estates. Thus her contribution when participating in The Women’s Exhibition in 1895 was an elegant interior.

After her death her work was recognized in Nationaltidende (In Danish): As baroness Anna Rosenkrantz passed away after a brief period of illness, it was a happy, charming and spiritually sound person, who was torn away. But it was also an artist, from whose hand the paint brush and palette was torn. Baroness Rosenkrantz, whose name would have been noticed frequently among visitors of art exhibitions, had been educated in depth. Her drawing skills were particularly superb, a skill she had special use for when creating the many interiors from old Danish castles, for example Rosenborg Castle - her beautiful and highly appreciated specialty. (Nationaltidende, September 28th 1923) Overlooking earlier auction sales, we see some of her work - mainly interiors from estates, castles and churches - several of them with motifs from different areas in Germany. Both regarding style and motifs the works of Rosenkrantz are related to works by Heinrich Hansen (1821–1890) and her contemporary I. T. Hansen (1848–1912).
