Bertha Wegmann (b. Soglio, Switzerland 1847, d. Copenhagen 1926)

Portrait of the composer P. E. Lange-Müller (1850–1926) at the piano. 1909. Signed B. Wegmann. Oil on canvas. 87×71 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg, “Bertha Wegmanns Mindeudstilling”, October 1926 no. 228.

Provenance: M. and V. Lange-Müller (1926).

The present painting is a repetition of a portrait of P. E. Lange-Müller from 1908 located at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle. Wegmann made the repetition for the Lange-Müller family.

The painting previously hung at Sophienberg castle in Hørsholm, North Zealand, which P. E. Lange-Müller and his wife Ruth owned from 1897 to 1922, and in the Lange-Müller family's possession until 1986.

The composer Lange-Müller wrote both symphonies, orchestral pieces, serenades, and more than 200 songs. Well-known is the music for Holger Drachmann's “Der var engang” (Once upon a time), which includes “Midsommervisen” (the Midsummer Song), renowned by most Danes.
