C. W. Eckersberg (b. Blåkrog near Aabenraa 1783, d. Copenhagen 1853)

“Prospekt af Hovedgaarden Nordfeldt paa Møen”. View of the manor Nordfeldt on the island of Møen. 1810. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 58×74 cm.

Emil Hannover, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of C. W. Eckersberg no. 87. An almost identical repetition of no. 86 in the Catalogue Raisonné.

Literature: Peter Michael Hornung & Kasper Monrad, “C. W. Eckersberg - dansk malerkunsts fader”, 2005 p. 66–81, a passage with the title “Naturromantik på Møn” (A romantic movement on Møn) mentions Eckersberg's stay and describes the paintings he made there, (no. 86 in the Catalogue Raisonné is reproduced p. 72).

In the exhibition catalogue from Thorvaldsens Museum and Fyns Kunstmuseum/Odense Bys Museer, “Aftenlandet. Motiver og stemninger i dansk landskabsmaleri omkring år 1800”, 2011, there is a long description of the motif pp. 107–108.

In 1809 Christopher von Bülow commissioned a series of landscape paintings by Eckersberg. He wanted Eckersberg to paint the manor Nordfeld, but also the surrounding landscape - including Møns Klint, (the Cliffs of Møn). Eckersberg depicted the manor and surroundings in a couple of paintings from the garden, but he also painted the manor and in a quite untraditional way not focusing on the house itself, which is seen from a distance and almost hidden behind trees.

The manor house appears as a kind of backdrop. The main motif instead takes place in the foreground with a horse and cows, a little well-dressed boy running and an elegant couple.

It is uncertain, how many paintings Eckersberg painted for Christopher von Bülow during and after his stay at Nordfeldt, but the series of landscape paintings was Eckersberg's last major job before he in 1810 started to make preparations for his journey to Paris and Rome, from which he returned to Copenhagen not until 1816.

Two paintings from the Møn series are today in the Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark). “Landskab med stente (Landscape with a stile, the island Møn, inv. no. KMS7694) and ”Prospekt af egnen ved Liselund på Møn" (View of the district near Liselund manor on the island Møn, inv. no. 7984).

Provenance: Count C. C. S. Danneskiold-Samsøe (1898).
