A. Lange & Söhne

Datograph Flyback “Base 1000 Meter” of platinum, ref. 403.035F. Mechanical movement with manual winding and chronograph and date indication, cal. L951.1. Black alligator strap with A. Lange & Söhne folding clasp of platinum. Ø 39 mm. circa 2000.

Accompanied by A. Lange & Söhne box, service papers 2014 and certificate from Asprey & Garrard 2002.

Introduced in 1999, the Datograph marked a defining moment in the modern history of A. Lange & Söhne. At a time when even the most prestigious Swiss watchmakers frequently relied on externally developed chronograph movements, the Glashütte manufacture introduced its own exceptional calibre L951.1, establishing a new benchmark for mechanical chronograph construction and finishing.

Comprising 405 individual components, the manually wound movement features a column-wheel chronograph, flyback function and precisely jumping minute counter. Its remarkable three-dimensional architecture, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, is complemented by exquisite hand-finishing and the hand-engraved balance cock characteristic of A. Lange & Söhne.

Manufactured circa 2000, the present platinum example, bearing the early case number 127960, belongs to the first years of Datograph production. Its original 39 mm case and distinctive black dial with contrasting silver-coloured subsidiary registers represent the inaugural design, celebrated for its harmonious proportions and characteristic “Base 1000 Meter” tachymeter scale.

Originally sold through the distinguished British jeweller Asprey & Garrard on 17 January 2002, the watch is accompanied by its original guarantee certificate and documentation of servicing by A. Lange & Söhne in 2014.

The first-generation Datograph remains one of the defining achievements of modern German watchmaking, combining technical ingenuity with exceptional craftsmanship and enduring design.
