In 1932, textile manufacturer C.C. Thomsen and his wife Mrs Esther Thomsen had their new home built at Bernsdorffsvej in Gentofte, north of Copenhagen. Arne Jacobsen, one of the young, pioneering architects of the time, was commissioned to design the villa. The couple selected the furnishings with care, an immense sense of quality and a keen eye for emerging trends. The villa framed a home filled with furniture, paintings and decorative art created by names that posterity has since shown to be the prime movers of the Danish modernist art and design tradition. An interior characterised by reflecting the couple’s veneration of Danish architecture and decorative art, with a particular emphasis on Axel Salto’s ceramic works which up until now have remained in the family’s ownership.
