Alvar Aalto (b. Kuortane 1898, d. Helsinki 1976)

A low lounge chair with moulded birch frame. Seat and back upholstered with blue fabric. Model 44. Designed 1932. This example made 1930–1940s by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku, Finland, with metal tag.

Provenance: Private collection.

The design of Alvar Aalto is almost defining for the Modernistic wave that spread throughout Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. However, it was not until 1928, when Aalto made contact with the leading figures of the Bauhaus movement, including Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer a.o., that Aalto marks his interest for Modernism. The breakthrough came with his work at the Paimio Sanatorium, including the “Paimio Chair”, which this Model 44 originates from.
