Chinese painter, mid 19th century
A ship's portrait of barquentine Alexandra of Middelfart off Macao. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 46×60 cm.
The barque Alexandra was built by master shipbuilder Illum in Middelfart in 1855 for a local shipping company for the trips to China. The ship's name was in the beginning Countess Danner, rigged as brig. In 1863, it was rebuilt and extended and the loading capacity thus increased. The ship was renamed Alexandra and changed into a barkentine with three masts, as can be seen from the ship portrait. Alexandra sank in Leith Fjord in April 1871, was later raised and refitted under English ownership as Caroline of London.
The canvas is relined. Crackles and retouches.
