The present painting is painted after the original by Peter Paul Rubens c 1617 located in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, INV. NO. Gemäldegalerie 532. In the present painting Cimon is absent from the komposition.
Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna writes of the original: “The narrative of this novella in Boccaccio’s Decamerone tells the story of Cimon who, despite his high birth, is not interested in education or manners. But when he sees the beautiful and cultured Iphigenia, he decides to earn her love by acquiring all the knowledge that is necessary for a nobleman. For the still life with fruit, and the landscape Rubens had the help, as so often, of the painters Frans Snyders and Jan Wildens”.
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 110, 1959 no. 178 and auction 481, 1985 no. 398.
Two repairs / patches on the reverse, two minor holes and a scratch with peeling. Minor crackles. In need of cleaning.
